Approval of Vocational Training

For training time to be recognised, all trainees are required to submit an Approval of Vocational Training (AVT) form prior to commencement of all terms. The College uses the AVT form to determine whether certain training positions are appropriate for accreditation.

Trainees must submit an AVT for their proposed training post for assessment, 30 days prior to the commencement of term to receive prospective approval. The information provided on the form is used to generate your In-Training Evaluation Report (ITER).

Lack of training record submissions may lead to your training account being made inactive. Depending on the amount of time passed, additional fees may be applicable to reinstate training.

Please contact the Training Department should you require assistance with submitting your AVT.

To begin an AVT submission:

  1. Trainees must login to their Members Portal
  2. Head to “AVT Submission”
  3. Enter the details of the term they wish to have considered for accreditation

For all accredited Medicine terms and Transition Year terms, a Position Description (PD) is required and must be submitted to the training department before your AVT can be processed.

What is accredited training?

An accredited training term refers to any term that is being accredited toward your CICM training requirements. You can find what additional training requirements are outstanding on your Dashboard or in your Assessment Letter.

An AVT is required for all accredited terms, with additional documentation required for accredited Medicine terms (see below) and Transition Year

All AVTs must be submitted for approval 30 days prior to the commencement of the term to receive prospective approval.

Accredited Medical Terms

For all accredited Medicine terms, a Position Description (PD) is required and must be submitted before your AVT form can be processed.

The PD must be on hospital letterhead and refer to the specific discipline in medicine you are focusing on i.e. cardiology, general medicine, haematology, etc. and the level of the position i.e. registrar, senior registrar.

Interrupted Training refers to any period spent in activities not relevant to training in Intensive Care Medicine (i.e. travelling, extended study or sick leave).

Such periods do not include ordinary leave provisions and ‘relevance’ will be determined by the Censor or the Board.

Interrupted training must be prospectively approved and will be individually assessed. To submit a request for Interrupted Training please use complete the Application for Interruption to CICM Training form.

Interrupted training will cover the following:

  • Parental leave
  • Locum work
  • Time off for study
  • Time off for travel or other personal endeavours
  • Compassionate leave (sick leave and carers leave)
  • Roles in non-patient-facing rotations (unless otherwise determined by the Censor)
  • Research & PhD studies
  • Dual Training
  • Other studies such as Masters etc.

With the exception of parental and compassionate leave, which carry a 100% fee reduction, this interrupted time will fall into section 6.2.2 of the fee policy

How long can I interrupt training for?

5.8.1 Trainees may interrupt their CICM training for up to 3 years (156 weeks) over the course of their training program, however a maximum of 1 year (52 weeks) can be approved at any one time.”.

5.8.2 Periods of interruption to training will contribute to the maximum timeframes permitted for completion of training, with the exception of parental leave. (See regulation 5.3.2 or 5.4.2)

For a 12-month term of training to be accredited, no more than 8 weeks leave for all purposes can be taken.

In the event of extended leave for all purposes, trainees must notify the College directly at the Training Department and the Censor will review to confirm whether additional training is necessary.
