Focused Cardiac Ultrasound in Intensive Care

In tandem with the 30 Focused Cardiac Ultrasound cases requirement, trainees are required to complete a Focused Cardiac Ultrasound course. Please see the ‘Approved Courses’ tab for a list of approved courses.

Once this has been completed, along with the 30 Focused Cardiac Ultrasound cases, trainees must complete a short online exam, which can be accessed via the Members Portal. These requirements must all be completed prior to entering Transition Year. For more information, please see T-35 Focused Cardiac Ultrasound in Intensive Care.

Trainees are required to perform 30 Focused Cardiac Ultrasound cases and have them evaluated as satisfactory by an approved Assessor. Please see 30 Focused Cardiac Ultrasound Cases for further information.

The online exam consists of multiple-choice answers relating to a combination of traditional questions, video loops and still images. A pass rate of 70% is required and the exam can be attempted as many times as necessary. This exam should be attempted after trainees have attended an approved Focused Cardiac Ultrasound course and had their 30 Focused Cardiac Ultrasound Cases approved.

The online exam can be found via your Members portal under the Online Learning tab.

In February 2014 the College Board approved the following statement regarding the Australasian Society for Ultrasound Medicine;

“Doctors who complete the College of Intensive Care Medicines Focus Cardiac Ultrasound requirement or any critical care doctor who completes the Rapid Cardiac Echo unit via the Australian Society of Ultrasound Medicine pathway will be considered by both CICM and ASUM to have equivalent qualifications.”

Focused Cardiac Ultrasound FAQs

How long should I take per case? Aim to take a maximum of five minutes per view, and if after this time you have not made a successful determination, move on to the next view. Overall, a case should take about 20 minutes.
How do I find an assessor?

A list of assessors is available on the Assessor tab.
If you have any difficulties finding an approved assessor, please contact the Education Department.

Am I allowed more than one assessor?

Yes, it is expected that trainees may have several different Assessors for the 30 Cases.

In what order should I do the Focused Cardiac Ultrasound curriculum?

Trainees should attend a face-to-face course first, and then within one year begin completing the 30 Cases. It is expected that the online exam should be the last requirement completed.

How do I find an approved course to attend?

A list of courses is available on the Courses tab

If I don’t start my 30 cases component within one year of completion of a course, do I need to complete another course?

No, beginning your cases within one year of course completion is a recommendation, not a requirement.
