Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is offered to all trainees for experience they may have gained prior to joining the training program. RPL applications can be submitted for Medicine, Anaesthesia and Elective terms, along with the Rural and Paediatric exposures, if the term meets the criteria set out in the relevant guidelines for each discipline. Core ICU training and Transition Year training are ineligible for RPL accreditation.
A list of guidelines for each term can be found here, or
RPL can be applied for at any time during training and applications are submitted through the Online Learning section of your Training Members Portal under the ‘RPL Form’ tab.
Applications must include Letters of Service demonstrating that the terms were completed for each rotation submitted for RPL. A Letter of Service must be provided on hospital letterhead and must include the following:
- Hospital name
- Discipline
- Start date and end date
- Level of Seniority e.g., Registrar, Resident Medical Officer etc.
- Type of appointment (full-time or part-time)
- Amount of leave taken
Courses previously completed may also be submitted as part of the RPL process. Applications will need to include the course certificate as evidence of completion to be considered for RPL. Please note that only one certificate can be attached to each RPL request. Certificates can also be sent to Assessments for review.
Fees
All training terms, including those which are retrospectively accredited, are subject to applicable fees. For RPL, fees will be calculated based on the annual training fee applicable to the year which the RPL assessment was conducted. The fee will be pro-rated based on the number of months retrospectively accredited.
For example, if 12-months of RPL is granted, you will be required to pay the full annual training fee. If 6-months of RPL is granted, you will be charged 50% of the year’s annual training fee. Invoices for RPL will be raised just before you are notified of the RPL assessment’s outcome. They will be required to be paid in the time stipulated on the invoice.
Please contact the Training Department if you have any questions.
