Observed Clinical Encounter
An Observed Clinical Encounter (OCE) is an opportunity for trainees to be observed and receive feedback on
their clinical practice.
Trainees are required
to:
-
Perform an appropriate clinical assessment of a critically ill patient
(suggested time = 20 minutes)
-
Present clinical findings with an appropriate discussion of
relevant patient management issues (suggested time = 5- 10
minutes)
-
Engage in a feedback conversation about their performance (suggested
time = 5-10 minutes)
Trainees who registered after 2014 are required to complete and submit a
minimum of one OCE, each with a different clinical focus, for each three
months of core training. Trainees who registered before 2014 are required
to complete four OCE’s as part of the application for the Second
Part exam. However, all trainees are encouraged to complete multiple
OCEs as needed, to assist with performance improvement. Any Fellow
of the College can complete the OCE form, in collaboration with the Trainee.
As the primary purpose of the OCE is to provide trainees with
opportunities for observation and feedback, trainees are not required to
reach a specified standard for each OCE. However, a submission of four
OCE’s which are rated at oversight or independent on the
assessor’s entrustment scale are required as part of the application
for the Second Part exam.
