Community Representative Position
Description
The College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (CICM) is seeking expressions of interest from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to join a working group focusing on embedding cultural safety, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, and cultural capability into its training program curriculum. The working group aims to improve culturally safe practices in intensive care medicine, through the development of the CICM curriculum framework for training in general and paediatric intensive care medicine. This includes integration of clear learning outcomes into the curriculum, identifying supporting learning activities for trainees and identification of appropriate assessment methods.
Your contribution may involve:
- Providing expert opinion and guidance on embedding cultural safety and health
equity into CICM's training program curriculum
- Providing recommendations for the development of additional teaching and
assessment tools addressing cultural safety
- Providing perspectives regarding addressing systemic barriers to improve
outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in intensive care
environments
- Reviewing educational frameworks and materials that other organisations have
developed
Desirable experience
- Experience working in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander healthcare
- An understanding of the Australian healthcare system and how it is navigated
by patients and their families and / or lived experienced with the Australian
health care system
- Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander
health issues, health inequities, colonial trauma and health and wellbeing
perspectives.
- Knowledge and understanding of cultural safety principles
- Experience in curriculum and/or education development
Location
- Most meetings are held online via Microsoft Teams, with the option to arrange
in-person meetings as they are required in locations that can be determined by
the working group
Time Commitment:
- It is anticipated that the work required on this project will take 9-12 months to
complete, with the aim to commence work in mid-June 2025.
- Approximately three to four hours per month of time commitment are
estimated, which includes working group meetings and review/adjustment of
relevant documents.
Remuneration
- Details on the remuneration of community working group members are based
on the Australian Government’s Tribunal’s ‘Member daily fee’.
About the College
The College of Intensive Care Medicine(CICM) is responsible for intensive care
medicine specialist training and education in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
The College provides continuing medical education and professional development,
maintains standards, and advocates for Fellows’ needs to governments and the
community. We provide a high-quality training program, with supervision of clinical
training, administration of assessments, and a range of workshops and courses. The
College ensures that ICU patients are treated by well-trained, qualified intensive care
specialists, in both adult and paediatric intensive care medicine.
