ANZCA CICM Dual Training Recognition Process update
The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) and the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) share a commitment to improving health equity and access to specialist care across regional, rural and remote areas of Australia and New Zealand.
ANZCA and CICM have made strong progress in streamlining dual training in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. The colleges remain committed to transparency and to clearly communicating the work undertaken to enhance integration between the two specialty training programs.
The ANZCA CICM Dual Training Recognition Process is reinforced by shared principles that:
- Maintain training quality and equity
- Maintain each college’s autonomy
- Ensure fair recognition of prior learning.
Aligned with these principles, key progress over recent
years has included agreement to mandate only one primary/first part examination
for dual trainees and finalisation of the guidance document,
outlining training areas and recognised overlap.
Change of terminology
The program has been renamed from Dual Training Pathway to Dual Training Recognition Process.
This change reflects that the collaboration does not introduce a new training program for dual fellowship. Instead, it provides a streamlined recognition of prior learning (RPL) process for trainees undertaking training across both specialties.
Launch date
Registration as a Dual Training Recognition Process trainee commences on Monday 3 August 2026.
Further information regarding registration processes and next steps will be communicated closer to the date.
Guidance and support will be provided to trainees and their supervisors by the ANZCA Director of Professional Affairs (DPA) and the CICM Training Team to support planning and training progression.
