Bullying Policy & Survey
Fellows and trainees of the College, and all staff in an intensive care unit, should be able to carry out their work in an environment free from bullying, harassment and discrimination. While the employer may have the principal responsibility to ensure the workplace is free of these issues and to take action over any transgression, the College also has a responsibility to intervene and to assist with resolving any complaints, particularly when training is affected. To this end, the College has recently published our policy IC-20 ‘Prevention of Bullying, Harassment and Discrimination in the Workplace’, which includes the procedures the College will follow on receipt of any complaint.

To try and establish reliable data on the prevalence of any behaviour which might fall under the above categories, the College undertook a survey of all Fellows and trainees. The survey generated a very positive response rate and it is intended that the College President will present the results of the survey at the 2016 Annual Scientific Meeting in Adelaide. The College Board will consider the results of the survey and also what further action should be taken to educate our Fellows and trainees and to help bring about a cultural change in the workplace.

Board Elections
In the first week of March all Fellows were sent an email requesting nominations for the CICM Board. If you have not received this email, please contact Lisa Davidson, lisad@cicm.org.au. Nominations are due on 31 March.

If an election is necessary the College will be using a secure online system run by a company called CorpVote. They will provide both online and postal options if requested. If an election is necessary, emails will be sent from CorpVote using the domain @netvote.com.au.
Board Report
The most recent Board meeting was held at the College on 25 – 26 February. For details on discussions and decisions of the Board, please click here to view the report.

CICM Strategic Plan 2016-2020
Following a lengthy consultation and drafting process, the Board approved the College’s strategic plan for 2016 – 2020. The plan outlines the College’s Mission and Vision Statements as well as key performance indicators in four main areas; Excellence in Training, Engagement with Fellows, A Sustainable Organisation and External Relationship. The plan is now available on the College website

Trainee Dashboard
The College is excited to announce the launch of the Trainee Dashboard.

The Dashboard is a valuable online resource designed to enhance interaction with our trainees and provide up-to-date information on a user friendly interface. Main features include a graphical snapshot of completed training, a summary of all training time approved (both retrospectively and prospectively), examination attempts, formal project status as well as a record of any Courses, Workplace Competency Assessments (WCA) and Observed Clinical Encounters (OCE) that have been completed. The Dashboard displays remaining training requirements in a format that is easy to follow and looks great on a desktop computer, laptop or tablet device. The College feels that this can help with career planning and interaction with Supervisors of Training when discussing future rotations.

For trainees who registered after the 1st January 2014 the Dashboard is available NOW! Trainees will be able to access their Dashboard via the Members Portal.  An email with further information regarding the specific details of the Dashboard will be sent directly to trainees in the coming weeks.
For trainees on the pre-2014 curriculum, the Dashboard will be available in the coming months and any information on enhancements and future release dates will be available on the College website and subsequent editions of the E-news.
Special Interest Groups
Terms of Reference
With the formation of several new Special Interest Groups by the College, the Terms of Reference for all groups have been updated. The new terms of reference can be found here.
Neuro Critical Care
At the recent Board meeting the College approved the formation of the Neuro Critical Care Special Interest Group. Some of the goals of this group will include fostering a coordinated and inter-disciplinary approach to caring for neurologically injured critically ill patients and providing a forum for discussion, debate and clinical support. If you are a Fellow and interested in being involved with this group, please email Sarah Vella, sarahv@cicm.org.au
The formation of a Welfare Special Interest Group has also been approved and we are seeking expressions of interest for those who wish to join. The group will collaborate in developing College resources for the benefit of trainees and Fellows and provide a forum for interested specialists to discuss welfare issues. If you are a Fellow and interested in joining this group, please email Lisa Davidson; lisad@cicm.org.au

A Guide to Workplace Competency Assessments (WCA)
As part of the current curriculum, trainees are required to complete a series of Workplace Competency Assessments (WCA) prior to entering the Transition Year. The College has developed an instructional guide for Fellows who will be assessing the WCA’s. The College would like to thank Drs Richard Strickland, Michael Farquharson and Yasmine Ali Abdelhamid for their involvement in developing the informative guide. Click here to view the guide on our website.

Attention: New Trainees
As a reminder, all Trainees who registered after 1 January 2014 are required to complete a suite of online and face-to-face courses prior to entering the Transition year of training. Please have a look at our website for further information on where to complete these courses and be sure to forward your certificates to assessments@cicm.org.au

Hospital Accreditation
Expressions of Interest for a Trainee Representative
The College is seeking expressions of interest from senior registrars who wish to be involved in hospital accreditation inspections. Being part of an accreditation team provides a great learning opportunity for trainees and provides insight into how other units and hospitals operate.
To register your interest, please contact Natasha Wilson, natashaw@cicm.org.au

Choosing Wisely Launch

Choosing Wisely is a health initiative run by the not for profit organisation NPS Medicine Wise. The aim of the campaign is to start conversations about improving the quality of healthcare by eliminating unnecessary tests, treatments, and procedures. The College and ANZICS have been involved in the campaign for the last 12 months and the second wave launch was held in Sydney on 16th March. Representatives, Matthew Anstey (WA) and Nhi Nguyen (NSW) attended the launch, which was brilliantly hosted by ABC identity Julie McCrossin. Our recommendations are now available on the Choosing Wisely website and the College and ANZICS will begin work on a plan to move the project forward.

Norva Dahlia Foundation Study Grant
2016 Grant Application Round
The Norva Dahlia Study Grant is made available by a donation from the family of Norva Dahlia Potter, who was a patient in the intensive care unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Its purpose is to assist Fellows or advanced/core trainees of the College in furthering their professional and scientific training in intensive care medicine. The Grant may be used for a specific short term project, or for costs associated with a short period of study overseas. (Attendance at an overseas conference would not normally be regarded as a period of study.) Recipients will be expected to deliver a tangible outcome from the project or period of study, for example a publication or presentation at a significant scientific meeting.
Value: Up to $5,000
Eligibility: Current CICM Fellows or Advanced Trainees
Priority:   Recently graduated Fellows (within 5 years of graduation)
Closing Date: 22 April 2016

Grant applications will be reviewed by an assessment panel appointed by the CICM Board. A maximum of two grants will be awarded in any one year.

Projects and study should be of direct relevance to intensive care practice and of a high scientific standard. Applications will be considered in both basic and applied research in addition to a period of defined study with demonstrable return to the intensive care community.

A final report will be due at the end of the project.

For more information and to request an application form, please contact Phil Hart by email at philh@cicm.org.au

Lung ultrasound – Inspiration or over-blown?
Sponsored by : LifeHealthcare

Saturday 4th June. 7.45 – 8.45 | Sit down breakfast Included.
Lung ultrasound has become a “hot” topic in recent ICU publications and international guidelines describing its diagnostic utility have been published. However, some findings can be strongly influenced by characteristics of the ultrasound machine and transducer used; the terminology used for some findings is idiosyncratic and potentially confusing; and despite the publication of many different and sometimes complicated imaging protocols, there remains no standardised approach to the use of lung ultrasound in the critically ill.

Saturday 4th June 2.15 - 4pm | Running Concurrently with 9A
