When determining the suitability of rotations for meeting the medical term requirement of the training program, the College is guided by training document T-7: Objectives of Training for the Medical Term. This document provides guidance to the Censor, trainees and SOTs on which medical terms are suitable and will meet the objectives for the term.
Recently the College has completed an extensive review process for this document in order to address concerns raised by trainees, and enhance the flexibility of training terms that may be considered as fulfilling the requirements of the medical term The complexities and nuances of medical rotations across Australia and Aotearoa have been considered through vast stakeholder engagement with the State, Territory and Aotearoa National Committees as well as the Trainee, Education and Censor Committees.
Following this consultation and review process, T-7 has been updated with the major changes being:
Trainees will have greater flexibility with regards to how their medical term is structured, rather than needing to ensure at least 6 months longitudinal and at least 6 months acute. Instead, trainees must ensure at least 3 months is completed in a position which involves assessment and management of patients with acute and undifferentiated medical problems and at least 3 months is completed in terms which involve inpatient management of greater than 24 hours duration. The remaining time may be made up of either category, as long as there is no more than 6 months in ED or retrieval. The requirement for at least 6 months of the total 12 to be completed as a registrar remains the same. Trainees should refer to T-7 when planning medical rotations and contact the College if unsure.
The updated policy document will be published on the CICM website in early 2023.
Medical terms will remain assessable by In-Training Evaluation Report. In the case of RPL, a comprehensive letter of service will need to be provided to the College. No terms completed in PGY2 will be retrospectively accredited from 2023 onward.
