Please contact Caitlin Gheller either at the College Office or at caitling@cicm.org.au if you have any questions.

Training Time Allowed in One Unit
A reminder to all trainees and Supervisors that the maximum accredited time that can be spent in any one unit is 24 months.

It is particularly important for trainees to be familiar with this Regulation when applying for positions and for Supervisors when they provide advice and guidance to trainees.
If you have any questions or concerns about current or future positions, we encourage you to contact the College to discuss your situation.

Written Exam Workshop
The College ran a workshop in January for trainees who were having difficulty passing the written component of the First Part, Second Part and Paediatric Second Part Exams.  The facilitators included the Chair of the Second Part Exam Committee, the College DPA for Education, representatives from the Panel of Examiners and A/Prof. Patsy Tremayne, Psychologist, from the University of Western Sydney.

The format consisted of an overview of the exam structure, practice written questions with individual feedback to each participant from an examiner and an interactive presentation on strategies for exam preparation from A/Prof Tremayne. Patsy has a background in sports and performance psychology and has extended this expertise to assisting vocational medical trainees with exam preparation. As a former Commonwealth Games medal winner, Patsy understands what is required for the preparation and performance in high-stakes events.

The workshop was well-received and there are plans to run this as an annual event with more opportunities for individual feedback and increased input from First Part and Paediatric Second Part Examiners. Places will be offered in the first instance to trainees who have been unsuccessful two or more times in a written exam.

Fellow Education Workshops
The first of a series of planned educational workshops for Fellows in Australia and New Zealand was run in Melbourne in conjunction with the Victorian Regional Committee on Tuesday 10 March.

A trainee mapping exercise which focused on individual trainee’s predicted training pathway for the next few years was considered to be a useful means to identify required non ICU rotations and to assist SOTs in giving realistic advice to trainees about their training plans.

A “Feedback” session was run with actors simulating some of the trainee ‘issues’ requiring feedback.

The workshop participants brainstormed topics for future workshops.

There was an excellent turnout of Fellows from many of the Victorian training ICUs.  The Fellow Education Workshops will continue to provide an opportunity for networking and sharing of common education and training issues and potential solutions.
